AFI Launches Online Photo Archive of Arab Region

The chairman of the Crest Investment Company, Jamal Daniel has furnished investment solutions in the oil and gas industry for more than three decades. Jamal Daniel also serves as the chairman of The Levant Foundation, an organization that works with universities and related entities to increase understanding about Middle Eastern history and culture.

Since its inception in 1997, the Arab Image Foundation (AIF) has amassed approximately half a million photographs of life in the Middle East and the Arab diaspora, some dating to the 1860s. In 2019, AIF launched its first online platform, which includes more than 25,000 “objects” and images from more than 80 collections. This is the first time the articles within the collections have been widely disseminated to the public. The AIF intends to release an additional 12,000 images every year, with the goal of digitizing all of the photos in its possession.

In the AIF’s digitized photo collection there is a 1956 photo of a rally in Lebanon in support of Gamal Abdel Nasser, the former Egyptian president. There is also a portrait of celebrated Russian actress and ballerina Tamara Toumanova taken by Egypt’s Armenak Arzrouni. While the stories behind some of the photos are extensively documented, others remain a mystery. By releasing the images to the public, AFI also hopes to open a dialogue with those who may be familiar with the images and able to provide more details about their histories.
